Readbright (grades K-2) is a program seamlessly blending a strong phonemic and phonological awareness in young students to ensure reading fluency in a manner that allows no child to be left behind and inspires confidence and excitement towards reading and motivates students to become life-long readers. Journeys (grades 1-5) is an all-inclusive ELA balanced literacy program developing skill, strategy, and strong comprehension in students. It includes spelling and vocabulary, grammar, reading fluency and reading comprehension. Our literacy coach continually raises the standards of learning and constantly introduces greater levels of thinking, training students’ minds to analyze, synthesize, and explore the depth and expanse of the written word. Day Book of Critical Reading and Writing (Houghton Mifflin-grades 6-8) encourages students to read, write, and think critically; to formulate responses as they read and formulate key strategies for strengthening literacy skills. As well our students conduct novel studies, conducting a critical analysis of the text they read-including chapter books and classics. At this point they are reading to write, analyzing information and citing text evidence. Students are introduced to many genres of writing, skillfully guided to master the art of each and produce true written masterpieces. Our writing coach Our students are well prepared to take the ELA as our program is directly aligned and meets all New York State Common Core standards.
Into Math/Sadlier Math Into Math/Math in Focus, K-3, supports the goals of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The focus of this math program is problem solving and acquiring the ability to skillfully use mental math to solve equations. Concepts are taught first concretely, then through pictures or stories, after which the new concept progresses towards the abstract. While meeting state standards our students are simultaneously working on computation to maintain that hold on solving equations quickly and efficiently. Sadlier Math, our math program for grades 4-8, is a comprehensive core math program that provides a pedagogy that reflects the keystones of mathematical learning that empowers students to: Foster conceptual understanding and skill development with a cohesive grouping of lessons, explicit instruction, and guided and independent practice Strengthen metacognitive development and promote learning with abundant real-world problem solving and applications related to STEAM Through fifth grade students are gaining the foundational building blocks of math as well as developing strong computation and comprehension skill. By grade 6, our focus is to develop a deeper understanding of basic math concepts, including fractions, decimals and percent. In 7th grade, students learn positive and negative with rational numbers. We then continue on to algebra. In 8th grade, we stress the skills necessary for high school.
Science in pre1a and first grade is very hands-on, students review the five senses, and explore biology and zoology They also incorporate science in their literacy, reading and exploring many non-fiction books relating to the sciences. Our second and third graders learn Studies Weekly, exploring new science concepts each week, exposing them to many sciences and cultivating a genuine curiosity towards the world around them. In fourth grade our students learn Earth Science/Physical Geography with Into Science by HMH. From fifth grade our students explore science through a Jewish lens with Rabbi Yaakov Lubin’s science programs The Wonders of Creation in fifth grade, Fundamentals of Life Science in grade six. Seventh grade students study biology and our eight grade students, physical science/chemistry. S.T.E.M. – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math is at the center of our science programs in the seventh and eighth grades. Our students hold an annual fair to demonstrate their prowess in this area.
Our second and third grade students study communities, while in fourth grade, students are learning about states and regions. Fifth graders study the making of the American nation. Sixth grade students focus on global history with an emphasis on world geography and an overview of ancient civilizations and cultures. In seventh grade, students learn American History. They begin the year with the exploration of the “New World” and continue through the Civil War and Reconstruction. In grade 8, they pick up from the Reconstruction to the Industrial Revolution, and continue from the World Wars to the current day. Additionally, each student is exposed to current events with News on the Run. Throughout all grades we follow the state mandated curriculum.
